1843 Mortgage for White House Plantation
In 1843, James M. Lawton mortgaged White House Plantation. The mortgage was held by Winborn Lawton. Bill Davis was kind enough to provide us with a copy of the original document which has been transcribed below.

=tain bond and obligations bearing date the twenty third day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Forty three stand firmly held and bound unto Winborn Lawton in the final sum of Ten Thousand Dollars conditioned for the payment of the full and just sum of Five Thousand Dollars in five equal annual installments of one Thousand Dollars each to =gether with interest annually on the twenty third day of January of every year succeeding the state of the said Bond until the whole sum shall be paid (as by reference thereto will more fully appear Now Know All Men That I the said James M Lawton in Consideration of the said debt and sum of Money and aforesaid and for the better se =curing the payment thereof to the said Winborn Lawton according to the conditions of the said Bond, and also in Consideration of the further sum of Five Dollars to me the said James M Lawton in hand paid by the said Winborn Lawton at and before the sealing and delivery of these Presents the weight whereof is hereby acknowledged I the said James M Lawton have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do Grant bargain sell and release unto the said Winborn Lawton all that plantation or tract of land lying situate and being upon James Island aforesaid known as the White House Plantation, Butting and Bounding as follows On the North by the Public Road leading to Fort Johnson on the East by lands of Stiles, Mellichamp on the south partly on lands of Doctor Thomas Legare and partly by James Island Sound and on the West by the Public Road called the Savanna Road Containing Three Hundred and Sixty Eight Acres more or less according to the Landmarks division lines and fences under which it now Stands Together with all and Singular the rights Members Hereditaments and Appurtenances to the said Premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertain =ing To Have and To Hold all and singular the said Premises unto the said Winborn Lawton his heirs and assigns forever And I do hereby bind myself my heirs Executors and Ad ministrators to warrant and forever defend all and Singular the said Premises unto the said Winborn Lawton his heirs and assigns forever against myself and my heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns and all
